Some of the best cigars I have ever smoked have been on camping trips or far, far away from home. The challenge has always been transporting cigars to some of these exotic locations without crushing or damaging them in transit. This is where a product like the XIKAR Travel Humidor quickly becomes a lifesaver.
The XIKAR line of travel humidors are airtight, watertight, crushproof and made of a super-strong, ABS molded plastic. They range in capacity and size from the compact 5 cigar humidor ($25.99) to a massive 50-80 cigar humidor ($99.99). Each XIKAR Travel Humidor is made in the USA and comes with a manufacturer’s lifetime guarantee.
For the better part of a year, I have been testing and using XIKAR’s 5 cigar model. Pardon the dust in the images, but this case has been used! Just like all of the other travel humidors in the collection, the 5 cigar model features heavy-duty hinges and latches. There is even an added molded lock ring for extra security if you are worried about somebody pilfering your prized smokes. The latches have a nice, secure fitment and create an excellent seal on the humidor. You definitely know the humidor is closed when you hear the “snap” of the latches locking into place.
Inside the humidor you will find high density urethane foam to protect your cigars and keep them from jostling around in transit. The 5 cigar model will hold up to five Churchills, or just two to three larger smokes if that is all you are carrying inside. There are ridges cut into the foam that run lengthwise giving your cigar a nice place to rest. In all my travels with the XIKAR, I have had zero issues with my cigars being damaged while in the travel humidor. This includes trips four-wheeling in Moab, jetting down the Baja peninsula in a Polaris RZR with Ryan Millen, and just about everything in between.
The Travel Humidor is climate controlled by a foam humidifier that is set into the lid and a small gasket that seals where the two halves of the case join together when closed. To maintain proper humidity in the travel case, XIKAR recommends using a few drops of their PG Solution to fully charge the humidification unit. I picked up a bottle at my local cigar shop for around $8 and it has worked really well. I cannot give you any scientific data on how the XIKAR Travel Humidor performed with respect to humidity levels and how long it was able to maintain them. The reason for this is that the cigars were smoked well before this ever became an issue!
There are a couple of things to keep in mind when using the XIKAR Travel Humidors. First, they are not a substitute for your home humidor. They are designed for travel and simply transporting cigars from point A to point B. I would not recommend one if you are looking for long-term storage at home or the office. Second, the cigars you add to the travel humidor prior to your departure or trip should already be at optimum humidity. Whether you picked them up at your local cigar shop or pulled them from your home humidor, this will help ensure their trip will be just as successful as your own.
The XIKAR 5 Cigar Travel Humidor measures roughly 8 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ x 2″. It does not take up a lot of space in your carry on bag or backpack. The case is shown here in the front pocket of a 5.11 Tactical Moab RUSH 10 pack for size reference. I found it very easy to travel with and I liked how lightweight it was even when full. I will admit there were times when I vacillated between wishing I had the 10 cigar version and the 5 cigar version being just right, but I already know how to fix that problem! It is all about having the correct tool for the job, right?
Overall, I highly recommend the XIKAR 5 Cigar Travel Humidor if you are looking for a compact, travel friendly cigar case. For $25.99, you cannot go wrong! It has worked flawlessly on all of my trips and its compact size makes it easy to take it with you without having to sacrifice space or leaving something else behind. If you are looking for something larger, you can always go with the 10 or 15 cigar versions as they are just a couple bucks more in price.
