Toyota is headed back to Baja! Later this year, Toyota and Toyota Racing Development (TRD) will compete in the 47th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in the all-new 2015 Tundra TRD Pro with an all-star race team. The lightly modified Tundra will compete in the Full Size Stock Class this November and will finally give TRD a chance to show what the Tundra TRD Pro is made of.
For over 35 years, TRD has been designing and creating parts that have contributed to Toyota’s successful motorsports racing program. This year is no exception! The TRD team is confident that their race truck will have no problem tackling some of the most brutal, and punishing desert racing conditions in the world. Toyota Truck Chief Engineer and Race Team Navigator, Mike Sweers, stated, “With over 1,000 miles of harsh terrain, the Baja 1000 is the ultimate proving grounds for research and development that helps us continually improve our trucks.”
The race truck, and details about the team, were unveiled at this year’s SurferCross event. The all-star TRD Pro Desert Race Team will be coached by 22-time SCORE Baja 500 and 1000 Champion, Ivan “Ironman” Stewart. We asked Stewart about the his role as team coach. He replied, “I’m looking forward to it. I think we have a great truck and an incredible team. It’s going to be a very exciting race!”
Four drivers will take turns behind the wheel of the Tundra TRD Pro: Ted Moncure, Andy Bell, Jamie Bestwick, and Ryan Millen. Moncure is Toyota Racing Development’s Design Engineer and a SCORE Baja 500 and 1000 class-champion. Bell, a former motocross champion and Guinness World Record holder, has a SCORE Baja 500 championship in the Stock Mini class. Bestwick, who is a professional BMX Vert Rider, has an impressive record of 9 wins at the X-Games. Millen, founder of Millen Adventures, is an accomplished driver who has competed in the Baja 500, Baja 1000, Taupo 1000, and Trans-Siberian Rally.
We asked Millen what he thought about his team and racing the Tundra this year. He told us, “I think Toyota and TRD have put together a talented team. The Tundra TRD Pro is a great platform and the race truck is coming along nicely. I’m definitely looking forward to getting behind the wheel and seeing what it’s fully capable of.”
The race truck, which is still being completed, features: TRD tuned-Blackhawk Bypass Bilstien shocks, Eibach coils, Deaver leaf springs, and 17″ TRD forged wheels wrapped in 37″ BFGoodrich Baja T/A KR tires. The lights on the front of the Tundra are Hella HIDs, while the A-pilar lights are Hella LED Rally 4000s.
